Packaging: from drab to fab

Spent a little time this morning playing around with my oh-so-boring but-oh-so Eco friendly recycled brown paper bags. I really try hard not to kill the environment where I can, but sometimes going green can be so, plain? So here are my prettied up shopping bags and maybe I'll include them in my upcoming shows :) oh and it's really easy, I just used some non toxic water color paints!

Finished!

Just wanted to share the finished products from yesterday's pieces! I think they came out beautifully. I especially love the set crystals in the earrings, that was a last minute design choice that I'm happy I went with!

Recycled centerpiece

I decided its time to spruce up the house a bit and bring in a little of that spring feeling. This grassy centerpiece I made using found objects from the past: vase is from a wedding centerpiece, flowers are from my moms old arrangement in her basement, grass is from an Ikea project gone wrong, tin bucket used to hold soap when we lived at the apartment, and the blue ribbon is cut off an old dress I donated to salvation! Oh and the placemats are leftovers from my old jewelry display! Here they all are brought together and reborn :) and the best part is: I didn't bring in anything new ( so there is no need to find new storage space!)

Business nook!

Not sure if I ever updated the before and after of my closet business nook makeover. Even if I did, here are a few more photos! I have gotten so much more done now that it is all organized and cozy. I think my favorite part of it is the grassy green carpet because it brings an outdoorsy feel to the place! Also, I'm wearing a new version of my 5 circle necklace in the photo!

If you've ever talked to me about house design, you know how I'm obsessed with what I've dubbed, "Indoor-outdoorness". It roughly translates into bringing  nature in it's natural state inside the home, just as it would be growing outside. Like the Spanish courtyards that enclosed the outside within the four walls of their house. Since I don't have the pleasure of owning a courtyard I make do with what I have, and I also make with what I have, that being MOSS.

  I love working with moss. I love it for so many reasons some of which are it's renewable nature, the color and texture it brings to my work, and of course it's message of growth and life it symbolizes. I have an ongoing collection I call,  Urban Garden, where I house most of my moss creations. I like the idea of  wearing a tiny piece of land or bringing you're garden with you on you're everyday travels.

Sustainable Living LONG POST!

So this is going to be a lengthy post just as a heads up :)  I think the gorgeous weather has gotten me in a really good mood, and when I'm happy, I work hard! It just so happens that EVERYTHING I made/ did this week was eco forward so I'm here to post all about it! 

1) The first thing I didn't  really do but it has been a dream of mine for about 5 years to have my own vegetable garden.  So Kirk kindly built me one in our backyard and I couldn't be more excited! I don't believe this will nix my grocery shopping for good, but it should provide a healthy amount of local organic ingredients to the dinner table this summer.

2) Linen Napkins! I finally got around to making them. Now  we not only have napkins (which were a scarce commodity in our kitchen) but they are reusable. Hooray for reducing and reusing! Plus I got to use my hello Kitty sewing machine Let's all rejoice!

My Hello Kitty is no joke! It's one tough flowery aqua blue machine! 8 layers of fabric were no problem at all.

3) This next one might sound a bit strange : Grass Paper. YES It's so cool and so green ( no pun intended)  I've always loved paper making if you didn't know. I used to make circles of paper using two coffee cans and a screen when I was little. I've gone and graduated from the cans and have since built myself a nice deckle and mold. So this was a small sidetrack from my original recycling project which was Trader Joe's bags into grocers cardstock. I just couldn't resist trying this though! 

I won't lie, the pulp smells pretty strong at first but the results are amazing! For my first try at it I was super impressed!  It dries really fast in the sun and I was able to cut and bend my first pieces. The best part is how clean and 100% biodegradable it is!  I will be using this in my packaging somehow.

3) Last but not least, as you might have guessed, I am attempting to create a greener business from an artistic stand point. A lot of changes have happened for my business and are still happening but I have officially found a new direction for my work and I'm super excited to be sharing this news with you all! For now, that is all I will say!
